9.65cm and 1.118 meters at the withers. These are the records held by Milly and Zeus, respectively the smallest and largest dogs of all time recorded in the World Guinness Book.

Milly's record was recorded on February 21, 2013 in Puerto Rico when she was 1 year and 2 months old. At birth, the little chihuahua dog weighed only 28g and could fit in a teaspoon. As an adult, she weighs only 567g.

Conversely Zeus is known as the greatest dog of all time. The world record for this Great Dane was approved on October 4, 2011 in the state of Michigan in the United States.

Today, it's Freddy, another Great Dane who holds the record for the largest living dog in the world.

" With their impressive measurements, it&39;s no wonder that Great Danes are also among the heaviest dogs in the world. In 2017, a representative of the breed aged 5 and living in England displayed a weight of 99kg, the weight of an elephant at birth. Although impressive, this dog with an elephantine weight has not been approved by Guinness World Records, which now refuses to list this kind of record for obvious animal welfare reasons. The heaviest dog ever recorded was Aicama Zorba of La-Susa, an English Mastiff living in London, UK. According to his record recorded in 1989, he weighed 155kg and also had a record length of 2.544m from nose to tail."

Smaller, bigger, heavier: watch out for hypertypes

Hypertypes are morphological modifications of the animal causing a significant accentuation of certain distinctive traits of a dog breed. All these excesses that take the dog away from the standard of its breed, which are sought after by some breeders or buyers for purely aesthetic reasons, can be the cause of he alth problems in dogs. The hypertype should therefore not be a criterion for choosing your animal.

Why do big dogs live shorter than small dogs?

If, on average, a dog lives between 11 and 13 years, we nevertheless know that there are disparities between small dogs and large dogs. The former thus tend to live longer than the latter with a life expectancy of 14 years against 7 to 8 years for the largest of them. For a long time, science has been trying to explain this difference in longevity between small and large dogs. One of the hypotheses would be that puppies belonging to large breeds produce more free radicals than the others. Free radicals are the cause of oxidative stress that causes damage to the cells of the animal, which would make their organism age much faster.

2259 years

43cm

43 cm is the size of the largest canine tongue ever. It belonged to Brandy, a Boxer dog who lived in Michigan until 2002. For comparison, the largest human tongue certified by the World Guinness Book measures "only" 10.1cm.

Today, the record for the dog with the largest tongue belongs to Mochi, a female Saint Bernard who lives in South Dakota in the United States. The length of his tongue has been officially established at 18.58cm.

1700 vs. 10000

Despite the impressive length of Brandy and Mochi's tongues, the story does not say if they had a much more developed sense of taste than their congeners. In ordinary dogs, there are about 1,700 taste buds compared to an average of 10,000 in humans. Taste buds are receptors located on the tongue that identify chemical substances present in food and thus perceive their flavor.

34.9cm

The longest ears ever measured in a dog belonged to Tigger, a hunting dog belonging to the Saint Hubert breed and living in the state of Illinois in the United States. His ears measured no less than 34.9 cm and 34.2 cm.

Did you know?

Against all expectations, the length of the ears does not help a dog to hear better but to smell better. By dragging to the ground, the long ears of a hunting dog thus serve to bring back the odorous molecules in the direction of its nose.It is therefore no coincidence that hunting dogs, reputed to have a highly developed sense of smell, also have very large ears like the Saint Hubert dog, the Basset Hound, the Beagle or even the Afghan hound. .

" Trained by her master, John Pilley, who was a retired American teacher and psychologist, Chaser was able to identify 1,022 toys by name. Not only did Chaser recognize the semantics (the meaning of words) but also the syntax of a simple sentence (for example: bring toy A to toy B), in other words she understood that the meaning of words is not the same in depending on the order of these words in the sentence.
