Origin of the Goldendoodle

Goldendoodles are crossbred dogs born from the cross between a Golden retriever and a Poodle. They are usually medium or standard sized dogs. These dogs began to be developed in order to create breeds considered hypoallergenic, an undeniable quality of the Poodle which is a dog that sheds very little hair and which was used in this cross to compensate for the exaggerated hair loss of the Golden Retriever. On the other hand, this breed is put on a pedestal for its ability as a guide dog, therapy dog, characteristics inherited from the Golden Retriever, known and recognized for excelling in these jobs.

But why develop a new breed of dog if there are already dogs that fulfill these functions to perfection? It is at this point that all the pieces of the puzzle begin to form a complete picture because, what if the person being guided by a Golden is allergic to dog hair? This is when the Goldendoodle is the perfect dog. The first Goldendoodle puppies were born in 1992 in Australia and the United States. Currently, it is a breed considered as a hybrid because it does not have an official cynological standard.

Characteristics of the Goldendoodle

A Goldendoodle can be of three different sizes: large, weighing between 20 and 30 kilos, medium, weighing between 14 and 20 kilos, or mini, for a maximum weight of 6 kilos. In any case, there is a well-marked sexual dimorphism, since it is estimated that the females are about 5 cm shorter than the males, a difference that is even more noticeable and pronounced in larger specimens. The life expectancy of these dogs is around 12-15 years. They are elegant dogs that have a long body, rather light and elongated extremities. The latter contrast with the fact that their tail is rather short. Their head is thin and long, their muzzle is prominent, their nose is black, their eyes, well separated, are dark in color and their large drooping ears frame their magnificent little faces.

Goldendoodle Puppy

If there's one thing that can't be argued with about the Goldendoodle, it's that they are absolutely adorable puppies. But, did you know that puppy fur is completely different from adult fur? When they are born, the Goldendoodle have a smooth and very abundant hair, but from the 6 weeks, their fur begins to curl little by little. From 3 months, their hair is wavy, but at 6 months they are completely curly.

Colors of the Goldendoodle

As there is no official breed standard, there are also no allowed colors and refused colors. However, there is a predilection for the typical colors of the two parent breeds, that is to say light colors like the golden of the Golden, or white, brown, black and gray of the Poodle. The most common are golden and cream colors. In general, they have thick, long and curly fur, forming a dense and very full coat. It is thicker and longer at the head, legs and tail. This characteristic varies between specimens, as some may have wavy or even smooth hair.

Goldendoodle mini

" The Mini Goldendoodle is the result of crosses made between a Golden Retriever and a Toy Poodle. These dogs are different from the standard Goldendoodles for their much smaller size. While a normal Goldendoodle weighs between 14 and 20 kilos, a mini Goldendoodle will not exceed 6 kilos. Also, the mini Goldendoodle is much more energetic than medium or large specimens."

Goldendoodle Character

Goldendoodles can be proud of their good natures, as they are incredibly social, cuddly, sweet and delicate. They get along perfectly with all dogs, cats, children, elderly people, families, single people, etc. This dog is ideal for almost all types of families and homes. The only type of social nucleus they won't really tolerate are people who spend a lot of time away from home, as these dogs can't really tolerate loneliness. Given their kindness and outgoing nature, they will be useless as watchdogs as they are not at all hostile with strangers.

They are very active, which is why you need to make sure they get enough exercise. If you neglect this aspect, your Goldendoodle may end up barking excessively and engaging in destructive behavior.

Caring for a Goldendoodle

The Goldendoodle requires a series of daily cares. For example, he must be well fed according to his nutritional and energy needs. You have to be careful not to overfeed him, because he is a rather gluttonous dog who will not stop eating before finishing his bowl and who can easily end up suffering from overweight and obesity. Alongside his diet, you must also pay attention to his hydration, which is even more important than his diet, which is why you should always leave fresh drinking water available to him.

These dogs need daily exercise. To do this, you can take them for long walks or do sports with them, such as running or swimming. It is also recommendable to play with them. In addition, be aware that you will have to take him out between 3 and 4 times a day so that they can do their business.

As for his coat, it requires frequent brushing, it is indeed recommended to brush it once a day, because it is the only way to prevent knots from forming. You can wash it once every 1 or 2 months.

Goldendoodle Education

A Goldendoodle has a docile nature and will cooperate 100% during training sessions. This is what makes it one of the easiest crossbreed dog breeds to train. It will be necessary to start socializing it from an early age, to do this you will have to introduce it to all types of people, animals and environments. This is what will help you ensure a stable and positive character in your adult dog. It will also be important to teach the puppy to urinate in a newspaper and, once he has had all his vaccinations, to urinate in the street.

Once you reach adulthood, you will teach the dog the basic obedience orders, fundamental for good communication and cohabitation with the tutor. It should be said that these dogs have a very good sense of smell, which is why it is easy to teach them to follow scent trails. That's why you can build treasure hunts, because they'll have a blast. To conclude, remember that it will be fundamental to use positive reinforcement and to avoid punishment and shouting.

Goldendoodle He alth

As we will see, these hybrids can present alterations typical of the two parent breeds.

From Golden Retrievers, they generally inherit their tendency to suffer from hip dysplasia, which is why it is advisable to bring them often to the veterinarian so that an exhaustive traumatological check-up can be carried out at using periodic x-rays. This is the one and only way to perceive if there is any problem.

From Poodles, they inherited the tendency to suffer from hematological diseases, such as von Willebrand's disease, which affects the conformation of blood platelets. They also inherited their tendency to suffer from visual disorders, such as cataracts or entropion. Something typical of both breeds, since both Poodles and Goldens tend to suffer from eye diseases, such as those mentioned, but also retinal atrophy or glaucoma. All of these conditions can lead to blindness, which is why you need to have your dog's eyesight checked frequently.

In addition, he must be given analyzes, deworming and vaccinations. Also, don't forget to emphasize mouth, ear and eye cleaning. In this way, you can protect your pet against the appearance of many diseases. For all these reasons, we recommend that you take him to the vet every 6 to 12 months.

Adopt a Goldendoodle

When adopting a Goldendoodle, you should know that there are different types of crosses:

  • First generation or F1: direct crosses between pure Poodles and pure Goldens
  • Average crosses F1b: is crossed one of the pure parents with a Goldendoodle
  • Second generation F2: crossing of two Goldendoodles

Knowing the crossbreed is important if you want to be sure of the characteristics and he alth status of your puppy. F1 is said to be more robust than F1b, while F2 guarantees better hypoallergenic characteristics.

Differences between Labradoodle and Goldendoodle

Frequently doubt arises about the differences between a Labradoodle and a Goldendoodle, right? The difference is in the cross breeds, because, while a Labradoodle is born from the cross between a Labrador Retriver and a Standard Poodle, the Goldendoodle is born from the cross between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle, which can be standard or miniature .

Keeping these differences in hybrid fathers in mind, it's normal that there are physical differences, such as weight. Either way, the minimum weight is 6 pounds, but while Labradoodles can end up weighing up to a maximum of 45 pounds, Goldendoodles never exceed 30 pounds.

Generally speaking, both are good-tempered, very intelligent and docile, but Labradoodles are generally more energetic and they can even end up being more nervous and more reserved. As for their appearance, the coat colors of the Goldendoodles are lighter, predominating golden and caramel, something more variable in the Labradoodle, in which it is possible to see a greater variety of colors, such as black, blue , chocolate or red.
