Origin of the Burmese Cat

The Burmese originated in Thailand, where several works have proven the existence of a cat corresponding to the description of the Burmese between 1350 and 1767.

In 1930, an American boat brought a Burmese cat named Wong-Mau back to San Francisco. His coat was hazelnut in color with darker ends. The Wong-Mau cat is bought by Doctor Joseph C. Thompson who will carry out several crosses with cats from Thailand (including a sealpoint Siamese) to obtain a particular color. The CFA will recognize the Burmese cat breed in 1936 and the breed will be imported to the United Kingdom in the 1950s to be recognized by the GCCF in 1952. The United Kingdom will continue crossings to obtain the English Burmese with a lighter color.

Characteristics of the Burmese Cat

English Burmese Cats are medium-sized cats, weighing between 3 and 5 kilos, with females being closer to the lower limit than males. His body is of strong build and marked musculature, rounded shapes and strong legs. Its tail is long and straight, ending at its tip like a small round paintbrush. The head of a Burmese is round, with protruding cheeks and separate, shiny, round eyes, usually golden or yellow. His ears follow the rounded pattern of his whole body and are medium in size.

The coat of English Burmese cats is short, fine and satiny, as it should be noted that it should be close to the body and each hair is lighter at the root and darker at the tip.
