Meat

As a carnivore with an omnivorous tendency, the dog has very high protein needs. Normally, 30% of a dog's total calories should come from protein! So what better than meat to provide it with these precious nutrients? If your dog is not very active (which is the case for the majority of our "couch" dogs), prefer lean meats that provide a lot of protein and little fat so as not to promote the installation of extra pounds! So all poultry meat (without the skin) with the exception of goose, bison, rabbit, veal and certain lean cuts of beef will make your dog happy with few calories!

Give raw meat to your dog if you are sure of its sanitary quality or, failing that, offer him meat cooked for a few minutes in the pan or blanched for 1 min in boiling water. Meat should be part of each of your dog's meals if he is fed a homemade diet. On the other hand, if it is fed with croquettes, its distribution must be occasional because its croquettes (if indeed they are well chosen) must already provide all the nutrients and energy that your dog needs!

Fish (fat)

Fish is also an ideal food for a dog in need of protein! If you choose it rather fat like salmon, sardines, herring, tuna or mackerel, it will also provide it with precious long-chain omega-3s, anti-inflammatory and good for the skin, coat or even more. the brain ! But watch out for the calories! Limit the distribution of oily fish to once a week at most if your dog is not very athletic to prevent him from becoming overweight. For every day, if it is fed with a home food, prefer to give it white and lean fish (pollock, bass, carp, hake, whiting, panga, pollock, cod) and fish oil in capsules to provide it with precious omega-3s without too many calories!

If your dog is fed kibble, he can receive fish oil capsules every day in addition to his kibble (and especially if his kibble does not contain enough omega-3) and occasionally cooked lean fish meat.

The egg

Eggs are also an excellent source of protein. Its yolk also provides lipids, vitamins (A, D, B2, B5, B8, B9 and B12), minerals (mainly iron and phosphorus) and carotenoids with strong antioxidant power. Very digestible for the dog, the egg can therefore be part of the diet of animals fed with homemade food or be given as an occasional supplement to an animal that eats kibble. The yolk can be given raw (if the egg is fresh and of good sanitary quality) while the white should be given preferably cooked.

Zucchini

Meat, fish, eggs are good but it's not enough to cover the nutritional needs of the dog which are not made only of proteins. To have a good intestinal transit, the dog also needs fiber that cooked zucchini can provide!

Zucchinis are indeed vegetables rich in water and therefore low in calories that can be added to your dog's bowl every day, whether he is fed with a household ration or with kibble! In the second case, they increase the volume of the food ration ingested by the dog and thus help to satiate it more.

Yoghurt

Full of probiotics (good bacteria for the dog's intestine) and proteins, yogurt is a food that dogs can eat without any problem unlike other dairy products.Yes, yogurt is devoid of lactose, the milk sugar that can cause digestive disorders in dogs. Under the action of its good bacteria, yogurt is devoid of it. In addition, if you choose it with semi-skimmed or 0% milk, it brings all its benefits and low fat to your animal. On the other hand, do not rely on yogurt to cover your dog's enormous calcium needs, if he is fed exclusively with homemade food. The yogurt brings some but not enough for the dog! You must then supplement your pet's ration with an appropriate mineral-vitamin supplement.

Rapeseed oil

Rapeseed oil is particularly interesting in dogs because of its high content of linoleic acid, a fatty acid from the omega-6 family, particularly essential for its role in the skin barrier and in linolenic acid, an essential fatty acid from the omega-3 family. These omega-3s help modulate inflammatory reactions in the body, regulate blood clotting and maintain good skin and hair quality

It is for these reasons that the ration of a dog fed with homemade food should always include a little rapeseed oil! This addition of rapeseed oil is however not necessary in dogs fed with dry food.

Berler's yeast

Brewer's yeast, in powder or in flakes, is a natural food supplement that can be suitable for all dogs, whether they are fed homemade or industrial food. Rich in group B vitamins good for skin and hair as well as prebiotics, brewer's yeast is good all the way!
