Why is 2020 the year of R?
Why are purebred dogs named with a letter per year?
This rule was introduced in 1926 by the Société Centrale Canine to bring order to the LOF, the French canine civil status register. When the LOF was created in 1885, breeders were not obliged to register their dog at the time of birth, so some even registered several years later. Result: the LOF, not computerized at the time, quickly became very complicated to consult because the dogs were registered there in an anarchic way. It was absolutely necessary to find a system that makes it easier to navigate. This is how the Société Centrale Canine had the idea of introducing the “one letter, one year” rule. Since the introduction of this rule, we know very quickly in which year a dog was born.
" But, the year 2019 was the year of first names starting with the letter P. How come 2020 isn&39;t the year of the Q to baptize our four-legged friends? In the alphabet, however, it is the letter immediately following the P."
Well, quite simply because there are very few first names starting with Q for a dog and this letter would reduce the possibilities too much for owners of dogs born in 2020. We would end up with too many many dogs with the same first name. The Société Centrale Canine has therefore decided to remove the letter Q as well as the letters K, W, X, Yet Z, deemed difficult and has therefore reduced the alphabet of canine names to 20 letters.
But don't worry, this letter "one letter, one year" only applies to purebred dogs, registered in the LOF. If you have a crossbred dog or one not registered with the LOF, you are completely free to choose a first name that begins with any other letter than the letter of the year.
" Similarly, if you have a “LOFé” dog but no first name in R finds favor in your eyes, you can completely circumvent the rule by:"
- choosing an "official" first name starting with R for the papers and a first name by which you will call your dog on a daily basis,
- preceding the first name of your choice with the letter R followed by an apostrophe that you can choose to pronounce or not on a daily basis.
A name for life, how to choose it?
The chosen one for your dog must remain with him all his life, even if often, on a daily basis, we use a nickname or a diminutive. Preferably, it should be fairly easy to pronounce and punchy enough for your dog to react to it more easily.
There are different ways to name a puppy:
- We trust the breeder
If we do it at the last moment, that the puppy is ready for disposal, his papers may already be ready and that does not leave the choice of first name to future owners. If you do it early enough, before birth or from the first days, you can choose the name of the puppy and communicate it to the breeder before he establishes his papers.
- We're looking for family
Always with the first letter(s) of the current year, we search or invent a family name by brainstorming. To help you find inspiration, you can take into account the size of the dog, its breed, its character, or passions/interests common to the whole family.
- We play Scrabble
Several tries may be necessary but it's great fun and the whole family participates. We take out at least 1 R and we start with the average number of letters which is 5 letters. We can add more later to familiarize the name, by mutual agreement. R + O, L, G, U: With these letters you can make Roglu or Ruglo but also Regulo, Measles everything is possible from the moment the name is harmonious and everyone likes it.
