Why is 2022 the year of the T?
2022 is the year of first names in T because it follows the year 2021 which was the year of the letter S. Yes, when it comes to dog names, each year corresponds to a letter by which it is customary to start the first name of the dog born in the same year.
In fact, this "rule" is only valid for purebred dogs, understand those who are registered in the French Book of Origins (LOF), a kind of "civil status register" of all purebred dogs born in France. Established in 1926 by the Société Centrale Canine, this rule was intended to put some order in the register of the time which, of course, was not computerized. With the first letter of the dog's first name, you could know his year of birth in the blink of an eye, regardless of the date of registration of the dog in L.O.C.
Today, the L.O.F is computerized but the rule "one letter, one year" has remained. However, even with a purebred dog, it is possible to “work around” the rule if you cannot find what you are looking for with a first name that begins with a T. All you have to do is precede the first name of your choice with a T followed by an apostrophe.
For dogs crossed or not registered in the LOF, the rule is obviously not strict even if many owners still choose to respect it.
3 tips for choosing the right name for your dog
- Don't rush to choose your pet's first name to make sure you choose a name you really like. Keep in mind that you'll be using it to call your dog all the time for at least 10 years, so you must appreciate how it sounds.
- Preferably choose a short name, one or two syllables. Longer names may be more difficult for your dog to understand, you will find it difficult to repeat them and they will inevitably end up in diminutives.
- You must also appreciate the meaning. Does the first name evoke something positive for you? Isn't it ridiculous for your dog?
" Names starting with the letter T leave room for imagination and there is no shortage of them!"
To make your choice, you can refer to a physical attribute of your dog, such as its size for example. "Titan" may then be suitable for large dogs, while "Tiny" , "Titch" or even "Teenie" will go wonderfully well to small dogs. You can also take the opposite of this idea and call your Chihuahua "Titan" or "Tarzan" or your Peruvian Hairless Dog "Tuffy" ! It's more unexpected and brings a certain touch of humor!
The temperament, character and behavior of your dog can also motivate the choice of name. There is thus "Shy" for a somewhat introverted animal or "Tonic" or "Tornado" for a dog that is full of energy.
If it's popular culture that inspires you, then you can call your dog "Titeuf" after the hero of the comic strip or take inspiration from the Pokémon, Disney, Harry Potter universe to choose his first name.
Everything (or almost) is allowed and it's up to your imagination to find the name that best suits your little protege!
Dog first name: 2 mistakes not to make
- Avoid choosing a name that sounds like a cue you plan to teach your dog. Your dog could lose his Latin there. Imagine how difficult it would be to teach the indication "sit" to a dog whose name is "Tassi"
- Do not give your dog a name that other people might find offensive or embarrassing. This includes crude, incorrect, indelicate, obscene, scatological words, rude slang terms or “human” names.Ask yourself if you'll still take it on when the vet calls it out in the waiting room in front of everyone. It's a good way to know if the name you're considering for your dog is too racy.
